Create a PDF in seconds…

Want to create a PDF of the document you are working on in Word, Pages, Quark, Photoshop or, indeed, just about any application you can think of? In OSX, it’s easy. Simply select Print from the File Menu then in the lower left of the Print options there is a small tab labelled PDF. Simply click on that and select ‘Save as PDF’ and your PDF will be created! How much easier could it be? Granted, you don’t have the boatload of options for creating PDF’s that you can find in professional software, so you’ll have to invest a little when producing your next eBook, but for simply sharing documents in a universal format that everyone can read it’s a neat little tip.

Close all Finder Windows

Here’s a quick yet sweet little tip today. Lets say you have a ton of Finder folder windows open on your desktop. Want to close them all without having to click the red x over and over until your hand hurts? Simple. Make sure any Finder window is open then hold down Command (the Apple key), Alt and W. All gone!

Good time to buy?

I’ve been asked recently by friends if it’s a good time at the moment to buy a Mac. I’d have to say, unequivocally… NO!

Lets look at the current range of computers, and why it’s better to wait:

Mac Mini: Hasn’t been updated since September, likely to be updated with an Intel single core Pentium M shortly, hopefully a low end Core Duo in the more expensive model!

iBook: hasn’t been updated since last July. Likely that the next revision will use Intel processors and be known as the ‘MacBook’. At that time, the current PowerPC version will no doubt be available at a massive discount on eBay, if you don’t want to risk the 1st generation of Apple/Intel products.

PowerBook: similar to iBook, and soon to be discontinued sadly. Only buy at heavy discount!

iMac: probably the only computer I’d recommend purchasing right now in the Apple line. Of course, you are risking somewhat since it’s a 1st Gen Intel product, but the power:price ratio is nice, especially if you can qualify for an educational discount…

PowerMac: I predict the next update will stay with PPC, perhaps moving to Dual proccessor, Dual core (quad) across the board. A dual-dual 2.3 would make an excellent mid range purchase – great value for money. Currently, a regular dual 2.3 isn’t great value for money – I’m really happy I got my 2.7 last year when I did! If they do move to Intel instead of what I’ve suggested above, then regardless it will at least create some interest and hopefully a good power/$ ratio. Currently, it just doesn’t provide that, unless you go for the quad.

Conclusion: If you’re determined to get a PowerPC based Mac, wait it out a little longer until the Intel updates are here and pick up a bargain on eBay. If you want an Intel Mac, give it a little more time until the Rev B’s are here, with any problems resolved and a slightly improved spec.

Switching between Apps, and Windows within Apps

Most PC users are aware of ALT+TAB to switch between applications in Windows. Apple has included a similar feature in OSX whereby holding Command (the 'Apple key') and pressing tab will cycle between applications, in a similar way to ALT+TAB in Windows (just much prettier!).

A similar function many users don't know about is the ability to cycle between windows within the SAME application in a similar manner. For example, between 2+ documents open in MS Word. This is accomplished by holding Command and pressing the ` key to cycle through the various windows. Really handy when you are constantly shifting from one document to another on a small screen!

First Post!

Thanks for visiting my Blog. I switched to a Macintosh (2x2.7Ghz G5 PowerMac) last May after years of working on PC's. This blog has been created to provide hints and tips for those who've either just switched, or are thinking of making the switch. My principle areas are Flash design and Video editing/compositing, but this blog is intended for all new Mac users casual or expert, simply as a place to pick up useful little tips...

Hope you enjoy!
